STAR Nurse Residency Program
Setting You Up for Success
The St. Luke’s STAR (Supporting Transitions and Relationships) Nurse Residency Program supports nurses as they transition from the academic setting to functioning as independent, competent St. Luke’s nurses.
The transition shock of the first year of professional nursing practice can be daunting for new graduates. STAR Nurse Residency provides a community and environment for new nurses to learn, discover, reflect, and share the experiences unique to a nurse in the first year of practice. This program empowers nurses, improves confidence and job satisfaction, and fosters retention in the profession of nursing.
Through an evidence-based, interactive, year-long program, nurse residents gain knowledge, practice skills, and develop relationships with their peers that help to smooth the transition of the first year. Reflective practice, guest speakers, case studies, simulations, and group activities provide an opportunity for new nurses to practice effective communication, collaboration, critical thinking, stress management, resource utilization, time management, delegation, and self-care.
Who Attends STAR?
STAR is required for all new graduate registered nurses in any care setting with less than 12 months of experience. Absences are regulated in the same way as any other absence from work per St. Luke's policy.
- All new graduate nurses hired into New Graduate RN roles at St. Luke's will be enrolled in the residency program within the first 6 months of hire.
- New graduate licensed practice nurses (LPNs) in the acute care setting with less than 12 months of experience will also be enrolled in the program.
- Experienced acute care LPNs (more than 12 months of experience) are not required to enroll but may opt-in if seats are available.
- LPNs working in the ambulatory setting are not required to attend.
- LPNs who have previously completed the STAR program are not required to attend again after obtaining an RN license.
Mapping Your Journey
Months 1-3
We'll begin by discussing wellness and communication; documentation, culture and diversity; and delegation, collaboration, and time management.
Months 4-6
Our next topics include situational awareness; declining patients and wound care; and emergent situations.
Months 7-9
Next, we'll explore information literacy and trauma-informed care; teaching and precepting; and performance improvement and evidence-based practice.
Months 10-12
Finally, we'll cover ethics, death, and dying; critical thinking and story telling; and nursing professional practice before we celebrate your graduation!

- Communicating with patients, their families, and interprofessional colleagues
- Prioritization, delegation, and time management

- Applying reflective techniques to practice experiences
- Performing self-care

Accreditation
Effective February 1, 2022 the STAR Nurse Residency transition-to-practice program at St. Luke’s Health System located in Boise and Twin Falls, Idaho is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.
