St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital earns reverification as level II pediatric trauma center

The American College of Surgeons has re-verified St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital as a level II pediatric trauma center.

The achievement of re-verification confirms and recognizes St. Luke’s pediatric trauma center's commitment to the delivery of excellence in caring for injured pediatric patients in Idaho.

St. Luke’s Children’s was first verified in 2022; reverification must take place every three years.

“Achieving pediatric trauma reverification under the newest ACS standards is a remarkable milestone that reflects our team’s unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to every patient, every time,” said Dr. Morgan Richards, pediatric surgeon and medical director for St. Luke’s trauma medical director.

The reverification process included review of clinical and administrative processes by the American College of Surgeons to assess commitment, policies, patient care and performance improvement.

“It validates the work we do daily, not just within our walls, but across the region as a trusted resource for trauma expertise. This recognition is especially meaningful for our pediatric trauma program, which, as a children’s hospital within a larger facility, was acknowledged as a unique and independent leader in pediatric trauma care. It speaks to the strength of our interdisciplinary teamwork, the depth of our hospital-wide investment, and the dedication of every team member, from the bedside to the boardroom.”

Numerous program strengths were noted in the ACS re-verification report. Trauma, neurologic and orthopedic surgeons were highlighted for having a consistently excellent response rate to trauma activations. Additionally, injury prevention programs and engaged, committed trauma leaders were also noted.

Many additional services through St. Luke’s pediatric rehabilitation program help to support a patient’s ongoing healing and recovery, including social work, injury prevention initiatives and ongoing education.

To earn Level II pediatric trauma verification, a hospital must undergo an intensive review and meet hundreds of national standards, ensuring 24/7 access to trauma experts and providing specialized care in the emergency room, operating room, pediatric units, and pediatric intensive care unit. During the review, St. Luke’s Children’s was recognized as a vital regional resource, with reviewers highlighting the unique availability of our pediatric trauma experts to support and consult with outlying facilities, demonstrating our commitment to elevating pediatric trauma care across the region.
