ACL Prehab Program
Preparing for Surgery
The time between a confirmed ACL tear and your surgery is more than just waiting—it's a critical opportunity to set yourself up for a successful recovery. By taking proactive steps now, you can reduce the impact of your injury and improve your rehabilitation outcomes after surgery.
This video series walks you through four essential steps to get your knee ready:
- Control Swelling – Reduce inflammation to help restore movement and comfort.
- Improve Range of Motion – Regain flexibility to support better function post-surgery.
- Build Strength – Strengthen surrounding muscles to stabilize your knee.
- Normalize Your Walking Pattern – Restore a natural gait to prevent compensatory issues.
Let’s get started on the path to recovery.
Getting in Shape
Swelling Control: R.I.C.E.
- R – Rest: Your knee may not tolerate your usual activity levels, so expect to spend more time off your feet before surgery.
- I – Ice: Use ice for 15–20 minutes several times a day to help reduce knee swelling and pain.
- C – Compression: Compression helps reduce swelling, especially when you're on your feet. Use a wrap or sleeve during the day with gentle pressure.
- E – Elevation: When resting, elevate your knee above heart level for 15–20 minutes, 3–5 times a day. Adding ice and compression can further reduce swelling and pain.
